A few weeks before he stayed with me, Punch was attacked at the park by a big mean dog who took his left eye out. His family rushed to the vet, who reinserted his eye and prescribed several medications. The hope was that the eye would get better. Three weeks later, the eye had only gotten worse. After seeing a veterinary ophthalmologist (eye doctor), the decision was made to remove the eye. The family, however, had to go out of town and brought Punch to me. One of my specialties is caring for special-needs dogs (for example, I've cared for diabetic dogs, epileptic dogs, blind dogs, deaf dogs, dogs with advanced cancers etc), so I was (with permission from his vet) able to care for Punch. Surgery was scheduled for the day after his family got home. Unfortunately, on Thursday I noticed that Punch's eye was getting much worse, and fast. It had started bleeding from the pupil and was swelling even worse than before - it was now 3-4 times its normal size! I spoke to the owners and, with their permission, scheduled emergency surgery for the morning. By the next morning, the eye had worsened even more and had split open from swelling. Dr. Adrian Bulata ( http://www.alfavet.co.il ) in Jerusalem performed the surgery (enucleation of the eye, or eye-removal), which went perfectly with no complications. He was on heavy pain medication and felt no real pain, and within 24 hours was mostly back to his old self. In 7-10 days he'll finally be free of his Elizabethan Collar (head-cone) after over 40 days. He, his family and I can't wait to get back to having a happy, healthy pet - minus one eye! Lucky he has a backup... -- This video was recorded while these dogs stayed with Naomi the Dogsitter (me!) Dogs that stay at Naomi the Dogsitter's kennel get real home care with no cages!
